Standing 867 feet tall is the Devils Tower National Monument. The Devils Tower is thought to have received its name from a translation from the original inhabitants’ name for it, “Bad God’s Tower.” Many, however, disagree; but the truth is lost to time. When President Theodore Roosevelt declared this site a national monument in 1906, the name solidified, and now 500,000 visitors come to see it every year. Of those visitors, an average of 5,000 are rock climbers because, yes, you can climb the Devils Tower! Other activities for visitors include hiking, learning about the 20 affiliated tribes of the area, cross-country skiing, as well as joining a junior ranger program or ranger-led activity.
